As the senior contributing editor of Travel Life magazine, I generally do lots of assigning and editing, and I write the odd article (and generally ghost write one) each issue. But for Spring 2017, I got to write about four places I’ve travelled to.

Travel Life: Volunteering at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens

I’m really proud of the fall and winter issues of Travel Life. I got to edit some interesting articles by talented writers and I got to contribute one of my favourite pieces of 2016 to Pay It Forward, a column that explores voluntourism.

In February 2016, during a mountain biking trip to Maui, I chose a Wednesday morning and joined The Weed And Pot Club at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. They meet each week and work at weeding and potting (as the name cheekily suggests). Dig In! Volunteer for a short-term opportunity, like gardening, when you visit Maui appeared in the fall issue.

I also wrote a little piece called Avant, Après and in Between about unique après ski destinations around the world. I haven’t been to all of them, but I think I might need to try fat biking in Gstaad next winter.

Travel Life: Boston, Cape Ann and Spring Blooms

For the spring issue of Travel Life, I edited lots of fabulous articles by other travel writers, but I also got to write a few of my own.

“Shoot for the Blooms” is about where you can get your flower fix in the springtime. This roundup-style article provides lots of little snippets about various festivals, tours and opportunities to see spring blooms. Some I’ve been fortunate to see for myself and others are on my travel list!

The second piece I worked on was a bit of a double feature as it described a summer 2014 trip to Boston (Walk & Roll) and Cape Ann (Do North).

Writing and Editing for Travel Life magazine

For the last few months, I have been doing a bit of work with Travel Life and editor-in-chief Tammy Cecco. In the first issue of 2015 (Winter), I was more involved with the whole process of putting the magazine together as the senior contributing editor.

I wrote two pieces for that issue. The first was for the front of book. It was about what to take on a warm-weather vs. a cold-weather vacation – toques or bikinis, etc. Here is a PDF to the article Hot or Cold.

For the second article, I interviewed Aaron Smith of GoVoluntouring.com. I’ve mentioned GoVoluntouring in a couple of articles over the last couple of years, in the context of its offerings, but for this piece, I got to learn more about the company itself. The spring issue will soon be out. For that one, I wrote about a great trip I took to Boston and Cape Ann last year, as well as where to see spring blooms around the world. !
